DESCRIPTION:
Current Issues in Measurement
\n
The aim of the workshop is to explore contemporary issues in measurement&mdash\;its conceptual foundations\, its role in and reliance on theory\, and the philosophical issues it raises.&nbsp\;With this broad scope we hope to bring together different people working on measurement who are based in England and encourage more collaboration between them. In this sense\, topics of interest include (but are not limited to) measurement in quantum mechanics\, pragmatist and perspectival&nbsp\;approaches&nbsp\;to measurement\, or the practical design of measurement instruments.
\n
Organisers: Lucy Mason (RHUL)\, Bernardo Marques (RHUL)
\n
Arrival: 10 &ndash\; 10.15am (all times are BST)
\n
10.15 &ndash\; 10.30am &ndash\; Brief Introduction
\n
10.30 - 11.35am - Ruediger Schack - What is quantum dynamics if measurement is fundamental?
\n
11.40 &ndash\; 12.45am - Chris Timpson &ndash\; Metrology and Metaphysical Realism
\n
12.45 &ndash\; 1.45pm - Lunch
\n
1.45 &ndash\; 2.50pm - Hasok Chang: Measurement as Action: A Pragmatist View
\n
2.50 &ndash\; 3.15pm - Break
\n
3.15 &ndash\; 4.20pm - Alistair M.C. Isaac: Measurement between Legitimacy and Success
\n
4.25 &ndash\; 5.35pm - (Nancy Cartwright: In Defence of Ambiguity)&nbsp\;Unfortunately Nancy can no longer attend\, Lucy Mason will present instead
\n
The event is primarily in person and we encourage all those who can travel to try and be there. However we are looking at having a hybrid option as well for those who want to listen in\, let us know if you would be interested in that.
\n
Please email lucy.mason@rhul.ac.uk to let us know if you're planning to attend so we know numbers!
