DESCRIPTION:<p>We are pleased to announce the Graduate Workshop on "Explaining<br>Explaining" to be held in Vienna from September 1-3\, 2025. The workshop<br>is organized under the auspices of\, and funded by\, the Vienna Doctoral<br>School of Philosophy (VDP).<br><br><strong>THEME</strong><br>Explanations recur as a constant and central theme in philosophy:<br>philosophers contend that in mathematics\, proofs are favoured for their<br>explanatory values\; in the sciences\, theories are selected according to<br>explanatory virtues they exhibit\; in metaphysics\, explanatory relations<br>direct our accounts of concepts and ontological priority\; in philosophy<br>more broadly\, we offer and compare explanations for facets of reality in<br>order to resolve conceptual problems.<br><br><strong>CONFIRMED SPEAKERS</strong><br>Prof. Dr. Francesca Poggiolesi (CNRS\, Paris)<br>Prof. Dr. Chiara Lisciandra (Heinrich Heine University\, D&uuml\;sseldorf)<br>Prof. Dr. Benjamin Schnieder (University of Vienna\, Vienna)<br>Fourth speaker to be confirmed<br><br><strong>SUBMISSIONS</strong><br>We invite graduate students (Master and PhD) to present their original<br>work on topics related to the philosophy of explanation at the workshop.<br>That includes approaches from different areas\, including but not limited<br>to logic\, metaphysics\, philosophy of science and so on. The time<br>allocated for each presentation is 30 minutes\, including discussion.<br>Students from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to<br>apply to promote diversity and equity in academia.<br><br>Abstracts (up to 500 words\, references not included) should be sent in<br>PDF file format to&nbsp\;workshop.explaining@gmail.com.<br>Please make sure to include your name\, affiliation and the title of your<br>paper.<br><br>In case you need financial support\, please write a brief statement of<br>financial aid.
