DESCRIPTION:
Call for Proposals
The Gadfly Symposium: Disruptive Pedagogies in Philosophy
Saturday June 6\, 2026 | Host: Eastern Washington University | Venue: EWU Cheney Campus
\n
Hosted by Eastern Washington University\, The Gadfly Symposium invites proposals for presentations\, workshops\, and collaborative teaching demonstrations exploring innovative and disruptive pedagogical techniques in the teaching of philosophy broadly construed. Thanks to generous support from the Jeffers W. Chertok Memorial Endowed Professorship\, the Gadfly Symposium is fully funded.
\n
There is no fee to register\, and lunch will be provided to all registered attendees.
\n
This year&rsquo\;s theme\, &ldquo\;Disruptive Pedagogy and the Pursuit of Human Flourishing\,&rdquo\; calls educators\, scholars\, and practitioners to reimagine how the pursuit of human flourishing might be preserved in a time when much of what once sustained it has been automated\, outsourced\, or declared obsolete?
\n
For the purposes of this program\, disruptive pedagogy refers to teaching that unsettles default assumptions about knowledge\, authority\, technology\, and learning. We welcome broad interpretations of disruption&mdash\;including engaged pedagogy\, transgressive pedagogy\, inquiry-based learning\, and student-centered learning&mdash\;as frameworks for rethinking how philosophical inquiry across traditions\, periods\, and subfields can provoke deeper self-reflection\, civic engagement\, and moral imagination among students.
\n
We encourage submissions from those teaching any area of philosophy\, including (but not limited to) ethics\, social and political philosophy\, philosophy of mind\, philosophy of science\, non-Western and global philosophies\, applied philosophy\, and interdisciplinary contexts. Proposals engaging diverse philosophical traditions\, contemporary issues\, or novel classroom practices are especially welcome.
\n
Disruptive pedagogy\, in this spirit\, is not only a mode of innovation in teaching but also a practice of resistance&mdash\;a way to challenge and disrupt systems that limit access to knowledge\, constrain critical inquiry\, and undergird hierarchical structures.
\n
Preference will be given to proposals that:
\n
&middot\; Integrate digital technologies\, such as social media\, generative AI\, or immersive learning environments\, in pedagogically creative ways.
\n
AND/OR
\n
&middot\; Demonstrate how disruptive pedagogy can dismantle barriers and decenter authority in ways consistent with the Socratic spirit of inquiry&mdash\;challenging assumptions\, cultivating curiosity\, and fostering philosophical dialogue across differences.
\n
Submission Guidelines:
\n
&middot\; Travel stipends are available for presenters traveling from outside Washington and Idaho.
\n
&middot\; Abstracts (500 words) should clearly describe the project&rsquo\;s objectives\, pedagogical approach\, and relevance to the symposium theme.
\n
&middot\; Include bio\, affiliation information\, and any technical requirements. (100 words max)
\n
&middot\; Send proposals to ckirby@ewu.edu by April 10\, 2026.
\n
&middot\; Notifications of acceptance will be sent by April 17\, 2026.
