DESCRIPTION:
Whatroledidriskplayineconomic practices andthoughtinancientGreece\,andinwhatform? Wasit identified as a factor linked to contingencies and hazards that were beyond human control? Or was it assessed in terms of its nature and probable intensity\, allowing it to be measured and action taken to reduce it? And ifso\, whatempirical or theoretical procedures were used\, andwhat strategies were put in place? In a world characterized by political instability\, natural hazards still beyond the scope of scientific prediction and technological prevention\, and religious beliefs that encouraged reliance on divinationandoracles\,riskseemstohavebeenlessanobjectofreflectionthananinevitableparameter of the human condition that had to be reckoned with. In Risk and Survival in Ancient Greece: Reconstructing the Rural Domestic Economy (Stanford University Press\,1991)\, T.W. Gallant showed\, however\, that farmers in ancient Greece had developed a series of risk assessment strategiesthat were essential to ensuring the survival of domestic and civic communities. Specific technical procedures\, local mutual aid networks: the domestic economy of ancient Greece owed part of its efficiency to practicesand reflectionsthatconsidered risks\, calculated possibilities\, and proposed coursesof action. Economou hasrecently shownin The Economy ofClassical Athens (Routledge\, 2024\, 163-170). This complex context raises many questions: What tools and ways of thinking did risk assessment involve? Are there any traces of numerical calculations available? How did the consideration of risk relate to ethics\, politics\, and religion? Was the evaluation of risk present\, and under what form\, in ancient Greek texts on economic topics\, such as those on household management?By bringing together scholars of ancient philosophy\, history\, anthropology\, archeology and classicsbroadlyconstrued\,thisconferenceaimstoopenadialogueonthetopicofriskinancientGreek economic practice and thought.
