Texas Tech's Department of Philosophy proudly presents the 19th Annual Graduate Conference hosted by the Philosophy Graduate Student Association.
\nWe invite submissions for a philosophy conference on connections between experience and value. The conference aims to bring together scholars working at the intersection of philosophy of mind\, value theory\, and the history of philosophy. The conference will feature a keynote address by Dr. José\; Luis Bermú\;dez.
\nThe central question of the conference is broad: what\, if anything\, makes experience valuable?
\nWe especially welcome papers that bring ancient or historical accounts of perception\, affect\, cognition\, and value into conversation with contemporary debates about consciousness\, knowledge\, agency\, ethics\, and technology.
\nPossible topics include\, but are not limited to:
\nAncient and historical accounts of perception\, imagination\, desire\, emotion\, cognition and flourishing
\nValue in perception\, attention\, awareness\, and whether value requires consciousness\, access\, reflection\, or rational uptake
\nThe role of experience in well-being\, welfare\, the good life\, sentience\, and moral status
\nWhether experience reveals\, represents\, responds to\, or helps constitute value
\nTransformative experience\, rational choice\, and imaginative acquaintance
\nThe significance of lived-experience and situated knowledge
\nThe conference is intended to encourage dialogue between scholars who might not ordinarily attend the same event: ancient and historical philosophers interested in psychology\, ethics\, and value\; philosophers of mind working on consciousness\, affect\, attention\, and perception\; ethicists and value theorists concerned with welfare\, moral status\, and the good life\; epistemologists and philosophers of action interested in memory\, rational choice\, and transformative experience\; and philosophers examining artificial consciousness\, and technologically mediated forms of life. \;
\nOnly submissions from graduate students (and undergraduate students who have been accepted to a graduate program) are welcome.
\nPlease submit a paper of 3500 words (excluding references and abstract) that has been prepared for blind review. Papers should be suitable for a presentation of approximately 30 minutes. Each paper will be followed by comments from a Texas Tech graduate student and then opened up for Q/A followed by discussion.
