The workshop aims to bring together scholars working across intellectual history\, political theory\, socio-economic history\, political economy\, sociology\, and related fields in order to foster dialogue between historically grounded perspectives on economic planning and contemporary debates about its revival. We are particularly interested in contributions examining how economic planning has been conceptualised and practised across national and international contexts\, the politics of planning\, and the ways planning histories can (or not) inform present-day political and policy discussions. We are looking for both empirical and theoretical papers from diverse disciplinary angles.

Topics of papers may include (but are not limited to) the three following axes:

  1. Methodologies and ontologies of economic planning studies: How should planning be conceptualised and studied? Does the historiography of planning require a clearly defined research object?
    2. \n
  2. The politics of economic planning: How does planning move from a utopian ideal to an institutional infrastructure? How do struggles over expertise\, priorities\, and futures shape planning institutions and practices?
    3. \n
  3. Planning histories and contemporary debates: What can contemporary debates on industrial policy\, ecological transition\, and economic coordination learn from past planning experiences and their failures?
    4. \n

Applicants should submit an abstract of no more than 500 words outlining their proposal\, and a short CV by \;12 October 2026 \;to \;zoe.evrard@uclouvain.be \;and \;thomas.kayzel@sciencespo.fr. They will be informed of the outcome by \;20 October \;and will be requested to submit their papers by \;1st of December \;by the latest.

Please note that should your institution be unable to do so\, limited conference funds are available to support accommodation and travel expenses.  \;
