SUMMARY:The Past and Future of Universal Grammar
UID:20260622T001916Z-iCalPlugin-Grails@philevents-web-bd7db559-gt5qm

DESCRIPTION:<p>Grammar is universal in human populations\, pathologies aside. A theory \nof grammar should thus be a universal theory in this sense. Yet it is \nwidely contended today that it need not be the theory of Universal \nGrammar (UG)\, in the sense of its early generative formulations\, which \nhave taken UG to be a linguistically specific and species-specific \nbiological endowment consisting of functionally arbitrary formal rules. \nTheories of universal grammar have also been formulated in a number of \ndifferent ways in the past\, with far from identical underlying axiomatic\n assumptions. Furthermore\, the modern theory of UG itself is currently \nundergoing a significant reformulation\, following the development of \nMinimalism. This conference aims to provide a forum for assessing and \n(re-)directing the course that research on universal grammar and the \nbiological foundations of language should take over the coming years and\n decades\, bringing together linguists\, psychologists\, philosophers\, and \nbiologists.</p>
