DESCRIPTION:
The conference aims to\n philosophically analyse the\n social and psychological burden that today&rsquo\;s thoroughly\n interactive society\n imposes on its members\, through its unrelenting efforts to\n realise emancipation\n and democracy. The success of the Enlightenment project that\n turned\n emancipation and democracy into an incontrovertible part of\n modern life\, has\n produced &lsquo\;interactive metal fatigue&rsquo\; as an unforeseen and\n unintended\n consequence: the fatigue that follows upon our realisation that\n we have placed\n a virtually unlimited duty of emancipatory responsibility upon\n ourselves.
\n
This guiding idea has been\n developed for the last\n couple of years in the research programme &lsquo\;Interactive metal\n fatigue&rsquo\; directed\n by Gijs van Oenen\, sponsored by the Netherlands Organisation for\n Scientific\n Research NOW\, and carried out at the Faculty of Philosophy of\n Eramus University\n Rotterdam. Initially\, the research took its clues from the\n notion of\n &lsquo\;interpassivity&rsquo\;\, as developed by philosophers Robert Pfaller\n and Slavoj Žižek\,\n in the sphere of philosophy of art. Extended and enriched\n through the notion of\n &lsquo\;interactive metal fatigue&rsquo\;\, the versatile concept of\n interpassivity has shown\n a surprising ability to diagnose a variety of new phenomena in\n contemporary society\n in new and productive ways.
\n
The broad scope of the\n research topic will make the\n conference of interest not only to philosophers\, but also to\n many practitioners\n in the social sciences and the humanities\, as well as to those\n who deal with\n issues in art and public space\, or issues of policing and\n governmentality.\n Cultural-psychological aspects of interpassivity\, like\n depression and narcissism\,\n will also be addressed.
\n
There is also room for a\n number of presentations\, of\n about 45 minutes. Those interested in\n holding such a presentation should\n send an email to Gijs van Oenen before November 15\, 2011\, with a\n 300 word\n abstract\; email address vanoenen@fwb.eur.nl. You will be informed\n before January 10\, 2012\, about\n acceptance of your proposal.
