DESCRIPTION:<p>Abstract:</p>\n<p>Can we decide rationally about major life events\, such as having a child\, or joining a revolution? L.A. Paul argues that we cannot\, because such events are transformative: they change what we know and who we are. Transformation prevents us from determining which alternative has the highest expected utility. Here I show how transformation does not undermine rational decisions. By partitioning outcomes based on possible future valences\, we can determine our preferences\, calculate expected utility\, and make a decision. I consider three objections\, and show that none undermines my solution. Decisions about transformative experiences can be made rationally.</p>
