DESCRIPTION:<p><a target="_blank">The Expression\, Communication\, and Origins of Meaning (ECOM) Research Group</a> is pleased to announce that it will be hosting its <a target="_blank">second annual interdisciplinary workshop</a>&nbsp\;this November on <strong>"Expressive Language: Semantics\, Pragmatics\, and Origins"</strong>\, to be held <strong>November 19-20\, 2015</strong> at the University of Connecticut. <br> <br> The workshop will explore theoretical analyses &mdash\; offered from a variety of perspectives (such as metaethics\, philosophy of language\, psycho- and socio- linguistics\, and cognitive psychology) &mdash\; of systematic ways in which language is used to express emotions and other attitudes\, through\, e.g. slurs\, pejoratives\, laudatives\, exclamatives\, and evaluative terms.<br> <br> Our invited speakers are:</p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target="_blank">Timothy Jay (Psychology\, Massachusetts College)</a></li>\n<li><a target="_blank">Anna Papafragou (Psychology\, Delaware)</a></li>\n<li><a target="_blank">Dean Pettit (Philosophy\, UNC-Chapel Hill)</a></li>\n<li><a target="_blank">Ljiljana Progovac (Linguistics\, Wayne State)</a></li>\n<li><a target="_blank">Mark Richard (Philosophy\, Harvard)</a></li>\n</ul>\n<p><br><strong>We also invite abstracts of short papers by junior researchers (25-30mins) on the topics of the conference.</strong> Please submit abstracts in PDF format to <a target="_blank">Nathan Kellen</a> by <strong>October 20th</strong>. &nbsp\;(Authors of accepted papers will be notified during the following week.)&nbsp\;</p>
