DESCRIPTION:
Relations were at the heart of many philosophical views: Protagorean relativism\, the Platonic arguments for the Forms\, self-knowledge and divisions in the soul\; Academic and Aristotelian category schemes\; Stoic genera and Pyrrhonian scepticism to name only a few. However\, little scholarly work has clarified the role or conception of relations in such positions. How do philosophers think that one thing relates to another? Precisely how do views about relations impact on metaphysics\, epistemology\, psychology\, ethics and political thought?
\n
This conference will bring together experts from across ancient and contemporary philosophy to address the role of relations and relativity.
\n
Relativity in Ancient Philosophy 21th &ndash\; 22nd April 2016
\n
Durham University
\n
Department of Classics and Ancient History
\n
38 North Bailey
\n
Durham DH1 3EU
\n
All talks in Room 007\, known as the Ritson Room.
\n
April 21st 2016
\n
9am-9.30am
\n
Registration and coffee
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
9.30am- 11.00am
\n
Paolo Fait (Oxford)
\n
Relatives and substantial parts in Categories 7: another look at the aporia.
\n
11.15am- 12.30am
\n
Olivier D'Jeranian (Paris)
\n
The problematic status of the stoic "&pi\;&rho\;ό&sigmaf\; &tau\;&iota\; &pi\;ῶ&sigmaf\; ἔ&chi\;&omicron\;&nu\;"
\n
Lunch (Buffet)
\n
1.30pm- 3pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Elisif Wasmuth (Cambridge)
\n
TBA
\n
3.15pm-5pm
\n
Ugo Zilioli (Durham)
\n
Relativism and correlativity in ancient thought and contemporary physics: Plato&rsquo\;s Theaetetus 152a-157c and Carlo Rovelli&rsquo\;s quantum physics.
\n
Break&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
5.30-7pm
\n
Katerina Ierodiakonou (Geneva)
\n
Alexander of Aphrodisias on Perception as a Relative
\n
8pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Conference Dinner
\n
April 22nd&nbsp\; 2016
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
9am-9.30am
\n
Coffee
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
9.30am- 11.00am&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Roger Clark
\n
Context- Relative Pyrrhonism
\n
11.15am- 12.30am&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Michael Withey
\n
Friends and Relations in Aristotle
\n
Lunch (Buffet)
\n
1.30pm- 3pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Lauren Ware
\n
Plato&rsquo\;s Bond of Love: Eros and the Participation Relation
\n
3.15- 5pm
\n
Matthew Duncombe (Durham)
\n
Two Sorts of Relativity in Stoicism: differentiating and constituting.
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
5.30-7pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Voula Tsouna
\n
Aristotle and Plato on Reflexivity in Perception
\n
Pub visit
