DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR PAPERS\n\n9th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS 2016)\n\nJuly 6-9\, 2016\, University of Savoie\, Annecy (France)\n\nwebsite: http://iaoa.org/fois2016\ncontact: fois2016@easychair.org\n\nIMPORTANT DATES:\n\nFOIS Paper Submission Deadline: Jan 31\, 2016\nFOIS Notification: Mar 31\, 2016\nConference Date: Jul 6-9\, 2016\n\nDEFINITION AND SCOPE\n\nFormal ontology for information systems is now a research focus in such diverse domains as conceptual modeling\, database design\, software engineering\, artificial intelligence\, computational linguistics\, the life sciences\, bioinformatics\, geographic information science\, knowledge engineering\, information retrieval\, and the semantic web. Researchers in all these areas increasingly recognize the need for serious engagement with ontology to provide a foundation for their work\, where ontology is understood as a general theory of the types of entities and relations making up domains of enquiry.\n\nThe FOIS conference provides a meeting point for researchers from all disciplines with an interest in formal ontology. The conference encourages submission of high quality articles on both theoretical issues and concrete applications. As in previous years\, FOIS 2016 is intended as a nexus of interdisciplinary research and communication. It is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA\, http://iaoa.org/)\, which is a non-profit organization promoting interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology\, linguistics\, logic\, cognitive science\, and computer science\, as well as in the applications of ontological analysis to conceptual modeling\, knowledge engineering\, knowledge management\, information-systems development\, library and information science\, scientific research\, and semantic technologies in general.\n\nKEYNOTE SPEAKERS \n(details in http://www.iaoa.org/fois2016/index.php?n=Main.Program)\n\nFriederike Moltmann (IHPST\, Paris\, France &amp\; New York University\, USA)\nStephen Mumford (University of Nottingham\, UK)\nGilberto C&acirc\;mara (National Institute for Space Research\, Brazil)\n\nTOPICS OF INTEREST\n\nWe seek high-quality papers on a wide range of topics. Concerning scope\, an ideal FOIS paper will address both content-related ontological issues and their formal modeling\, as well as their impact and relevance for some aspects of information systems. Areas of particular interest to the conference include the following:\n\nFoundational Issues\n* Kinds of entities: particulars/universals\, continuants/occurrents\, abstracta/concreta\, dependent entities/independent entities\, natural objects/artifacts\n* Formal relations: parthood\, identity\, connection\, dependence\, constitution\, causality\, subsumption\, instantiation\n* Vagueness and granularity\n* Space\, time\, and change\n\nMethodological issues\n* Role of reference ontologies\n* Top-level vs. domain-specific ontologies\n* Relationship with cognition\, language and semantics\n* Formal comparison among ontologies\n* Ontology integration and alignment\n\nDomain-specific ontologies\n* Ontology of physical reality (matter\, space\, time\, motion\, etc.)\n* Ontology of biological reality (genes\, proteins\, cells\, organisms\, etc.)\n* Ontology of mental reality and agency (beliefs\, intentions\, emotions\, percepts\, etc.)\n* Ontology of artifacts\, functions and roles\n* Ontology of social reality (institutions\, organizations\, norms\, social relationships\, artistic expressions\, languages\, etc.)\n* Ontology of perception (human and artificial)\n\nApplications\n* Ontology-driven information systems design\n* Ontological foundations for conceptual modeling\n* Knowledge management\n* Qualitative modeling\n* Computational linguistics\n* Information retrieval\n* Semantic Web\, web services\n* Ontology and the Internet of Things: Smart Networked Systems and Societies\n* Ontology for Big Data\n* Business modeling\n* Ontologies for particular scientific disciplines (biology\, chemistry\, geography\, physics\, cognitive sciences\, linguistics etc.)\n* Ontologies for engineering: shape\, form and function\, artifacts\, manufacturing\, design\, architecture\, etc.\n* Ontologies for the humanities: arts\, cultural studies\, history\, law\, literature\, philosophy\, etc.\n\nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nSubmitted papers must not exceed 14 pages (including the bibliography) and include an abstract of no more than 300 words. Papers should be submitted non-anonymously and be prepared in PDF format in accordance with the IOS formatting guidelines found at http://www.iospress.nl/service/authors/latex-and-word-tools-for-book-authors/.\n\nThe EasyChair submission page is at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=fois2016\n\nAs with previous FOIS conferences\, the proceedings will be published by IOS Press\, this year in electronic format with permanent open access (!).\n\nFOIS SATELLITE ACTIVITIES\n\nFollowing the success of the 2014 edition\, FOIS 2016 will include\, in addition to paper presentations\,\n+ workshops\n(see http://www.iaoa.org/fois2016/index.php?n=Main.Workshops)\n+ a demo session\n(see http://www.iaoa.org/fois2016/index.php?n=Main.RelatedEvents#demo)\n+ a formal ontology competition\n(see http://www.iaoa.org/fois2016/index.php?n=Main.RelatedEvents#competition)\n+ an early career symposium (ECS)\n(see http://www.iaoa.org/fois2016/index.php?n=Main.RelatedEvents#ecs)\n\nFOIS 2016 will be directly preceded by the 3rd Interdisciplinary Summer School on Ontological Analysis. It will moreover be co-located with ICCS 2016 (International Conference on Conceptual Structures)\, to be held July 4-6.\n\nSATELLITE ACTIVITIES - IMPORTANT DATES AT A GLANCE\n\nECS Paper Submission Deadline:	Feb 26\, 2016\nECS Notification: Apr 15\, 2016\nDemo Submission Deadline: Mar 15\, 2016\nDemo Notification: Apr 11\, 2016\nOntologies Submission Deadline:	Mar 15\, 2016\nCompetition Notification: Apr 11\, 2016 \nWorkshop Proposal Deadline: Jan 15\, 2016\nWorkshop Notification: Jan 25\, 2016\n\nCONFERENCE ORGANIZATION\n\nGeneral Chair:\nGiancarlo Guizzardi (Federal University of Espirito Santo\, Brazil)\n\nProgram Chairs:\nRoberta Ferrario (ISTC-CNR\, Trento\, Italy)\nWerner Kuhn (University of California Santa Barbara\, USA)\n\nLocal Organization:\nPatrick Barlatier (University of Savoie-Mt.
