DESCRIPTION:
"Experimental Semantics" is concerned with the empirical testing of theories of reference. Starting with Semantics\, cross-cultural style\, the seminal work of Edouard Machery\, Ron Mallon\, Shaun Nichols and Stephen Stich\, this testing has been of the referential intuitions of the folk. Michael Devitt and Genoveva Mart&iacute\; have criticized this approach urging instead the testing of linguistic usage. This workshop is concerned with this new approach.
\n
The program of the workshop is the following:
\n
Friday (22nd April 2016)
\n
4:15 &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &ldquo\;The Reference of Proper Names: Testing Usage and Intuitions&rdquo\;
\n
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; (Michael Devitt and Nicolas Porot)
\n
5:55&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; break
\n
6:15 &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &ldquo\;Experimental Semantics\, Salience and Hybrid
\n
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Theory of Reference&rdquo\;
\n
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; (Filippo Domaneschi and Massimiliano Vignolo)
\n
Saturday (23rd April 2016)
\n
9:30&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &ldquo\;Exploring New Methods in Experimental Semantics&rdquo\;
\n
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; (Jussi Haukioja and Daniel Cohnitz)
\n
11:10&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; break
\n
11:30&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &ldquo\;The Role of Actual and Counterfactual Cases in
\n
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Experimental Semantics&rdquo\;
\n
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; (Jennifer Nado and Michael Johnson)
\n
1:10&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Lunch break
\n
2:30&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &ldquo\;Is There Referential Ambiguity?&rdquo\; (&Aacute\;ngel Pinillos)
\n
4:10&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; break
\n
4:30&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &ldquo\;Semantics Without Intuitions?&rdquo\; (&Aring\;sa Wikforss)
\n
6:10&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; break
\n
6:30 &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &ldquo\;Round table&rdquo\;
\n
End around 7:40
\n
We invite anyone interested in philosophy of language and experimental research on theories of reference.
