DESCRIPTION:
This symposium addresses the lack of public reflection on the value \nand the limitations of received religious paradigms and intellectual \nhabits across cultures concerning the welfare of animals and plants by \nopening up a new dialogue between thinkers and activists from different \nreligious and philosophical backgrounds on the global problem of \nbiodiversity conservation and animal welfare.
\n
The call for action \ncountering the accelerating speed of human destruction of the natural \nconditions of humanity's own existence has become a common place. \nEqually familiar is the shrugging of shoulders that nothing can be done \nabout it because destructive habits are rooted not only in industrially \nmagnified greed but in culture if not in human biology and hence are \ndifficult to change.
\n
Yet\, human feelings and attitudes towards \nanimals and other forms of non-human life vary greatly across cultures \nand time and are changeable. The continuing cultural influence of \nreligious and philosophical reflection on human behaviour cannot be \nunderestimated\, and is here\, at the doctrinal roots of widespread habits\n and customs\, that a fruitful debate on conditions and prospects for \nattitudinal change may be engendered.&nbsp\;
\n
At this time of rapid \nglobalisation\, worldwide environmental destruction and palpable \nexistential uncertainty\, few universally oriented deliberations on \npractical ethics across religious and cultural boundaries are on record.\n To the contrary\, the lamented process of universal self-destruction is \ndefended in the name of a combination of pragmatic necessity and \nentrenched value orientations and habits.
\n
This symposium provides a\n forum for discussion and dialogue between distinguished scholars\, \nactivists\, ethical and philosophical thinkers reflecting on the \npotential of existing cultural\, religious and philosophical resources \ncontributing to new trans-cultural orientations towards the preservation\n of human and non-human forms of life.
