SUMMARY:Axiomatic vs Semantic Truth

DESCRIPTION:
The conference's topic is the comparison between the two main approaches to truth: axiomatic and semantic. Why go one way rather than the other? Do the two approaches exclude each other? Are there alternative approaches? In which categories fall the most important existing theories? Is there a deeper metaphysical distinction underlying the two approaches? Can revenge arguments give grounds for preferring one approach over another? Can philosophical reflection on other disciplines\, such as logic and set-theory\, help us understanding the nature\, and the philosophical import\, of the semantic/axiomatic divide?
\n

\n
Programme
\n
Wednesday 14.3.2012:&nbsp\;
\n
9:20 Welcome address
\n
9.30-11.00 Volker Halbach: "Axiomatic and semantic theories of truth".&nbsp\;
\n
11.00 - 11.15 Coffee Break&nbsp\;
\n
11.15 - 12.15 Andrew Bacon: "A general approach to revenge paradoxes".
\n
12.45 - 2.00 Lunch Break&nbsp\;
\n
2.00 - 3.30 Luca Incurvati: "Axiomatic set theory\, realism and categoricity".&nbsp\;
\n
3.30 - 3.45 Coffee Break&nbsp\;
\n
3.45 - 4.45&nbsp\;Dora Achourioti: "Modelling the use of 'true' in natural language".&nbsp\;
\n
4.45 - 5.00 Coffee Break&nbsp\;
\n
5.00 - 6.30 Jc Beall: "Truth without detachment".&nbsp\;
\n\n\n\n
Thursday 15.3.2012:
\n
9.30-11.00 &nbsp\;Andrea Cantini: "Stratified truth?"&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
11.00 - 11.15 Coffee Break&nbsp\;
\n
11.15 - 12.45 &nbsp\;Leon Horsten: TBA&nbsp\;
\n
12.45 - 2.00 Lunch Break&nbsp\;
\n
2.00 - 3:30&nbsp\;Stewart Shapiro: "How we theorize about truth and other things".&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
3.30 - 4.30 Carlo Nicolai: "Truth\, syntax and conservativeness".
\n
4.30 - 4.45 Coffee Break&nbsp\;
\n
4.45 - 6.15 Hannes Leitgeb: "A theory of propositions and truth".&nbsp\;
\n\n\n\n
Friday 16.3.2012:
\n
9.00 - 10.30 &nbsp\;Jeffrey Ketland: "Deflationism vs representationalism".
\n
10.30 - 10.45 Coffee Break&nbsp\;
\n
10.45-11.45&nbsp\;Toby Meadows: "Let three flowers bloom".
\n
11.45 - 12.00 Coffee Break&nbsp\;
\n
12.00 - 1.30 Michael Glanzberg: "Semantic truth and correspondence theory".&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
1.30 - 2.30 Lunch
\n\n\n
Conference venue:&nbsp\;Siemens Stiftung\,&nbsp\;S&uuml\;dl.
