DESCRIPTION:
The theme of the conference is Perception\, Reason and Desire in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy. We&rsquo\;re pleased to announce as keynote speakers&nbsp\;professor Thomas Johansen (Oslo) and professor Cecilia Trifogli (Oxford).
\n
The conference aims to explore the different abilities (or powers) of the human soul. How do the different ancient schools understand perceptual\, cognitive and appetitive aspects of human psychology and how do they argue for their theories? What is their influence in the medieval debate and what are the particularly medieval developments? The aim of the conference is to attract graduate students working both in ancient and in medieval philosophy to facilitate a broader discussion on these themes.
\n
The conference will be held in connection with the Nordic Network in History of Philosophy Workshop exploring similar themes as the Graduate Conference. The participants have an opportunity\, if they so wish\, of attendng both events. Attending the conference provides opportunities for graduate students in history of philosophy to meet and make connections with Nordic scholars.
\n
For further information please contact:
\n
gradchp@gmail.com
\n
UPPSALA GRADUATE CONFERENCE IN HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY
\n
FRIDAY\, SEPTEMBER 30
\n
10:00 -11:00 | Eng 2-K1028 | &ldquo\;Aristotle on the Perception of Pleasure and Pain in De Ani- ma III.7&rdquo\; Harry Alanen (Oxford) | Commentator: Charlotta Weigel) (S&ouml\;dert&ouml\;rn)
\n
11:00 - 12:00 | Eng2-K1028 | &ldquo\;Aristotle on Phantasia and Desire in Animal Locomotion&rdquo\; Cecilia Li (Western Ontario) | Commentator: G&ouml\;sta Gr&ouml\;nroos (Stockholm)
\n
LUNCH
\n
13:00 -14:30 | Eng2-K1024 | ANCIENT KEYNOTE "Craft and Desire in Plato and Aristotle" | Thomas Kjeller Johansen (Oslo)
\n
14:45 &ndash\; 15:45 | Eng2-K1024 | &ldquo\;Perceptual Judgments in Plato&rsquo\;s Republic&rdquo\; Salda&ntilde\;a Eduardo (Geneva) | Commentator: Pauliina Remes (Uppsala)
\n
15:45 -16:45 | Eng2-K1024 | &ldquo\;Epicurus&rsquo\; Theory of Perception and the Problem of Conflicting Appearances&rdquo\; | Crist&oacute\;bal Zarzar (Cambridge) | Commentator: Erik Eliasson (Helsinki)
\n
COFFEE
\n
17:00 &ndash\; 18:00 | Eng2-K1024 | &ldquo\;Is John Buridan an Epistemic Fallibilist?&rdquo\; Philip Choi (Boulder) | Commentator: Erik &Aring\;kerlund (Newman) 19:00 |
\n
Reception
\n
SATURDAY\, OCTOBER 1 9:30-10:30 | Eng2-1077 | &ldquo\;Memory in Michael of Ephesus&rdquo\; Daphne Argyri (Athens) | Commentator: Mika Per&auml\;l&auml\; (Helsinki) COFFEE 10:45 -12:15 | Eng2-1077 |
\n
MEDIEVAL KEYNOTE "Thomas Aquinas on the Subject of Thought and the Status of the Human Soul" Cecilia Trifogli (Oxford)
\n
LUNCH
\n
13:15-14:15 | Eng2-1077 | &ldquo\;Thomas Aquinas on Self-knowledge of Habitus&rdquo\; Enrico Donato (Pisa) | Commentator: Tomas Ekenberg (Uppsala)
