DESCRIPTION:<p>UCLA Minorities and Philosophy Conference 2017</p>\n<p><em>Critiquing the Canon</em></p>\n<p>January 21st\, 2017</p>\n<p>UCLA</p>\n<p>Keynote Speaker: Peter K.J. Park (University of Texas at Dallas)</p>\n<p>The UCLA chapter of Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) invites submissions of papers addressing the topic of the philosophical canon. In recent years\, attention has been drawn to the exclusionary practices resulting in the ``core'' works of philosophy---those texts most often examined within academic debates and university curricula. We aim to facilitate a critical discussion of these practices.</p>\n<p>Anonymized abstracts of 500 words or less should be emailed to ucla.map.conference@gmail.com by December 16th\, 2016. Submissions should be accompanied by a separate cover sheet including the author's name\, affiliation\, and contact information. Decisions will be announced by January 1st\, 2017. Allotted presentation time for speakers will be 30 minutes.</p>\n<p>Both historical and theoretical papers are welcome. Possible areas of exploration include:</p>\n<p>- Historiographical investigations into the formation of the philosophical canon</p>\n<p>- Modern attempts at canon reorganization</p>\n<p>- Women or people of color in the history of philosophy</p>\n<p>- Philosophies of race\, gender\, or disability</p>\n<p>- Philosophies of racism\, sexism\, or ableism</p>\n<p>- Institutionalized discrimination within academic philosophy today</p>\n<p>The conference will also include a roundtable discussion on pedagogy\, which will be organized around the question of how we can respond as teachers to the content of our syllabi.
