The workshop also aims to acquaint post-doctoral fellows and lecturers with the &lsquo\;hidden norms&rsquo\; of publishing in international journals (roughly those accredited by the ISI or IBSS databases or published by presses such as Sage\, Springer and Taylor &amp\; Francis) as well as to rework participants&rsquo\; abstracts and introductions so that they conform to these norms.
\n
Topics will include: having an audience in mind before writing\; choosing a journal\; ignoring house style with profit\; ignoring word limits with even more profit\; formatting a paper so that you don't look like a new fish\; constructing the suitably brief abstract\; focusing on the five necessary and sufficient conditions for an introduction that is immune to criticism\; phrasing that thesis statement so that it exhibits cognitive strength\; indicating what's new about your work without sounding arrogant\; making each section its own mini-essay\; concluding in ways that forestall referee criticisms\; protecting your identity from nosy editors and referees\; dealing (emotionally and otherwise) with rejections\; proceeding with acceptances\; getting your work noticed.
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
Dates: Arrival 28th March 2017
\n
Workshop 29th to 31st March 2017
\n
Time: 9.00 &ndash\; 15.30 &nbsp\;
\n
Venue: Directorate of Research\, University of Calabar
\n
RESOURCE PERSON: Thaddeus Metz (Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Johannesburg\; author of more than 150 books\, chapters and articles\, most of them sole-authored and in international forums)
\n
Submit abstract (200 words max) and introduction (800 words max) on any topic in African Philosophy and Thought to colloquium@unical.edu.ng on or before February 10th\, 2017. There will be no extension. These abstracts and introductions will be reviewed by the resource person and used for practical training of participants during the &ldquo\;Activity sessions&rdquo\; at the workshop. Participants are to write the full paper after the workshop and submit on or before June 30th\, 2017. Papers from the workshop are to be reviewed and published as a special issue in a top journal.
\n

12.00
\n
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE/* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"\; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0\; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0\; mso-style-noshow:yes\; mso-style-priority:99\; mso-style-qformat:yes\; mso-style-parent:""\; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt\; mso-para-margin-top:0in\; mso-para-margin-right:0in\; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt\; mso-para-margin-left:0in\; line-height:115%\; mso-pagination:widow-orphan\; font-size:11.0pt\; font-family:"Cambria"\,"serif"\; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria\; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin\; mso-fareast-font-family:Cambria\; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin\; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria\; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin\; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"\; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi\;}
\n
Participants will be entitled to Certificates.
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
For inquiries/Sponsorship:
\n
Csp.info@unical.edu.ng
\n
08066003714
\n
08033486861
\n
http://csp.unical.edu.ng/&nbsp\;
\n
Jonathan O.
