\nFormal Ethics 2017

\n\nFormal Ethics applies tools from logic\, decision theory\, game theory\, and
social choice theory to the analysis of concepts in moral and political
philosophy and to the development of ethical theory. It is a rapidly
growing field of research which goes back to the work of Kenneth Arrow\,
Amartya Sen\, John Harsanyi\, Georg Henrik von Wright and others. The
field has recently gained new impetus with formal work on non-classical
logic\, freedom and responsibility\, value theory and the evolution of norms
and conventions. It now includes contributions not only from philosophy\,
but also from economics\, computer sciences and linguistics. Contributions
to this conference need not be formal in nature but should show familiarity
with the results of applying formal tools and results to ethical investigations. \; \;
We aim at an inclusive conference in which speakers at different stages of
their careers (including PhD students and post-docs) participate. We aim at a strong representation of female philosophers. Selected contributions to this conference will be invited to submit to a special issue of the Journal of Moral Philosophy.
The School of Politics\, Economics and Philosophy at the University of York is a centre of research in this field and is proud to host the fifth instalment of this conference series. After Groningen (2010)\, Munich (2012)\, Rotterdam (2014)\, and Bayreuth (2015)\, this conference comes to the UK for the first time.
\nWe cordially invite submissions of abstracts to be considered for presentation at the Formal Ethics 2017 international conference.
\nSubmissions in all areas related to formal ethics are welcome. Submitted abstracts must be of no more than 1\,000 words in length. Please send submissions in .pdf format with a cover letter detailing your name\, institutional affiliations\, and current position. Please prepare your submissions for blind review and send to formal.ethics2017@gmail.com with the subject &lsquo\;Submission.&rsquo\; We aim for a coherent programme in which different groups are equally represented. \;We particularly encourage submissions from graduate students and from members of underrepresented groups.
