UID:20260609T234027Z-iCalPlugin-Grails@philevents-web-bd7db559-gt5qm
TZID:America/Barbados
LOCATION:Cave Hill\, Barbados
DESCRIPTION:
The broad theme for the eighth Cave Hill Philosophy Symposium (CHiPS) will be issues related to&nbsp\;the philosophy of mind and cognition. In keeping with the spirit of our conversations\, we hope to&nbsp\;bring together thinkers operating in and across different cultural and philosophical traditions as well&nbsp\;as other disciplines that share a boundary with philosophy. We invite papers addressing questions and&nbsp\;pertinent issues from the field such as: What is mind? How does mind relate to body and the external&nbsp\;world? Is cognition embodied and situated? What is self? How can we understand other minds? How&nbsp\;do our understanding of mind\, body and cognition connect with the social and moral spheres of our&nbsp\;lives? We are especially interested in papers that give serious consideration to the role of embodiment in our&nbsp\;mental lives. CHiPS encourages dialogue across philosophical traditions\, and so particularly welcomes&nbsp\;contributions that deal with or compare a variety of philosophical traditions or approaches.&nbsp\; &nbsp\;
\n
Our keynote speaker will be Professor Shaun Gallagher. He is Lillian and Morrie Moss Professor of&nbsp\;Excellence\, Department of Philosophy\, University of Memphis\, USA. His secondary appointments&nbsp\;include Research Professor of Philosophy at University of Hertfordshire (UK)\, Honorary Professor&nbsp\;of Philosophy at University of Copenhagen (Denmark)\, and Affiliated Research Faculty at Institute&nbsp\;of Simulation and Training (UCF). His areas of research include phenomenology and the cognitive&nbsp\;sciences\, especially topics related to embodiment\, self\, agency and intersubjectivity\, hermeneutics\,&nbsp\;and the philosophy of time. He is co-editor-in-chief of the journal Phenomenology and the Cognitive&nbsp\;Sciences. &nbsp\;
\n
CHiPS VIII will be held in November 15-17 to coincide with UNESCO World Philosophy Day (this year November 15th). &nbsp\;
\n
Prof. Ed Brandon:&nbsp\;edbrandon@gmail.com
\n
Ms. Roxanne Burton:&nbsp\;roxanneeburton@gmail.com
\n
Prof. Frederick Ochieng&rsquo\;-Odhiambo:&nbsp\;frederick.ochieng-odhiambo@cavehill.uwi.edu
