DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n&nbsp\;\n
There have repeated calls in recent philosophy of science to explore analogies between artistic and scientific representation. I argue that these analogies are sound\, and point towards some common characteristics. In the first part of the talk I rehearse well known arguments against resemblance and denotation theories of representation in the philosophy of art. I provide an extension of the latter in terms of denotative function\, and I argue for it in conjunction with an inferential conception of the practice of representation. In the second part of the talk I argue that similar moves can be made as regards scientific representation\, and illustrate the resulting view by means of an example from the history of 19th century physics.
