DESCRIPTION:<p>All are most warmly invited to attend the 2013 annual&nbsp\;meeting of the APA Pacific Division\, to be held in&nbsp\;<strong>San Francisco</strong>&nbsp\;from Wednesday\,&nbsp\;<strong>March 27 to Saturday\, March 30</strong>.&nbsp\;This year's program covers all areas of philosophy through 70 invited sessions\, 190 refereed papers\, and 65 group sessions. Highlights include&nbsp\;John M. Fischer's presidential address on "The Path of Life&rdquo\; and a Dewey Lecture by Bert Dreyfus on &ldquo\;Standing up to Analytic Philosophy and&nbsp\;AI at MIT in the Sixties.&rdquo\; The full program\, with abstracts and preprints of many papers\, is available on the Pacific Division website\,&nbsp\;<strong>http://apa-pacific.org</strong>.<br><br>Many auxiliary events supplement the formal program. This year's annual reception will be held in two adjoining rooms\, with a live blues&nbsp\;performance to be held in one. Additional receptions are planned to honour President Fischer and the Dewey Lecture\, and to&nbsp\;welcome Amy Ferrer as the APA's new executive director. The APA's newly formed strategic planning task force will hold an open forum\, with&nbsp\;lunch provided by the Pacific Division.<br><br><strong>Hotel Reservations</strong></p>\n<p>We realize you have a choice of hotels\, but we ask that you book with the conference hotel at the APA rate. Here are four reasons to do so.</p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Pacific Division obtains&nbsp\;free meeting space&nbsp\;in exchange for guaranteeing a block of room sales. The savings are passed on to&nbsp\;participants through lower registration fees.</li>\n<li>Six percent of your room charge will be rebated to the Pacific Division to support&nbsp\;graduate student stipends. We are now awarding&nbsp\;twice as many stipends to students as five years ago\, and we are considering increasing the stipend amount.</li>\n<li>Free in-room Internet&nbsp\;access has been negotiated for those booked at the APA rate.</li>\n<li>Unite Here\, Local 2\,&nbsp\;the hotel workers&rsquo\; union\, asks us to patronize the hotel. The union has a collective agreement in place with the&nbsp\;hotel during our meeting.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>The convention rate is $179. The&nbsp\;deadline for reservations is February 23\, and members are strongly advised to book early. All participants\, including speakers\, commentators\, and chairs\, are required to&nbsp\;register.<br><br>Advance registration is $80 for APA members and $25 for APA student members. The&nbsp\;deadline for advance registration is March 26 at 12&nbsp\;noon Pacific time. There will be a $40 surcharge for on-site registration. Visit&nbsp\;http://apa-pacific.org/current&nbsp\;to register. <br><strong></strong></p>\n<p><strong>Attractions</strong><br><br> Overlooking Union Square\, the Westin St. Francis is a classic and historic deluxe hotel within walking distance of Chinatown\, the theater&nbsp\;district\, Yerba Buena Center\, the Museum of Modern Art\, and several smaller museums\, as well as dozens of San Francisco&rsquo\;s finest&nbsp\;restaurants. More attractions\, including North Beach and the Civic Center\, home of the Symphony\, the Ballet\, and the Asian Art Museum\, are&nbsp\;just a few minutes by public transport. Those traveling with children should note the new Disney Family Museum in the Presidio\, near the&nbsp\;Golden Gate Bridge. &nbsp\;</p>\n<p><strong>UC Davis Extravaganza</strong><br><br>The UC Davis Philosophy Department invites Pacific Division participants to attend the inaugural Davis Extravaganza&nbsp\;on March 25-26\, 2013. In addition to talks from seven distinguished scholars\, the Mondavi Institute for Food and Wine&nbsp\;Science will be sponsoring a wine tastings for participants both on campus and in Napa.
