DESCRIPTION:<p>The Phlox Research Group at Hamburg University is delighted to announce that the sixth installment of the Hamburg Summer School in Philosophy will be taught by Prof. Jessica Wilson from Toronto.<br><br>The course will explore the philosophically foundational topic of metaphysical dependence. We will become acquainted with diverse accounts of this notion\, in terms of modality\, realization\, the determinable-determinate relation\, primitive grounding\, composition\, and identity. Along the way we will identify the metametaphysical presuppositions of these accounts\, and assess their application to existing projects (e.g.\, the question of how best to formulate physicalism) and problematics (e.g.\, the causal exclusion problem and the question &ldquo\;What Grounds Grounding?&rdquo\;). We will also consider reasons for being pluralist or rather monist about metaphysical dependence\, and will explore how the notions of fundamentality and dependence may or may not be connected.</p>
