DESCRIPTION:<p>Masterclass on Galileo&rsquo\;s Methods of Investigation and Discovery<br> 24-28 October 2017<br> IRH-ICUB\, University of Bucharest<br> <br> Speakers include: Jochen B&uuml\;ttner (Max-Planck Institute for the History of Science)\, Daniel Garber (Princeton University)\, Mihnea Dobre (IRH-ICUB)\, Stephano Gulizia (IRH-ICUB)\, Dana Jalobeanu (IRH-ICUB)\, Matteo Valleriani (Max-Planck Institute for the History of Science).<br> &nbsp\;<br> The aim of the masterclass is to explore the various facets of Galileo Galilei&rsquo\;s work. It puts together scholars working on several aspects of Galileo&rsquo\;s thought\, including: experiments\, humanist methods\, and theorizing. We discuss themes such as Galileo\, the engineer\, the astronomer\, the mathematician\, the courtier\, the natural philosopher\, or the theologian. Each day we focus on a particular topic\, such as:</p>\n\n<p>Galileo\, humanist: what to do with history (history and natural history\, methods of reading and writing\, dialogue\, the geography of hell etc.).</p>\n\n<p>Galileo&rsquo\;s observations and experiments.</p>\n\n<p>The Technological context of Galileo&rsquo\;s science in <em>The Two New Sciences</em>.</p>\n\n<p>Dialectic and the dialogue &ndash\; discovery and teaching.</p>\n\n<p>Galileo theologian: reading the two books (Nature and Scriptures).</p>\n\n<p>The masterclass is mainly directed to early stage researchers\, but is open to any researchers (broadly understood from M.A. students to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers\, up to established scholars). The masterclass format combines lectures with reading groups. All the selected texts for discussions will be distributed with the participants before the beginning of the masterclass.</p>\n\n<p><br> For registration\, please send a CV and a cover letter to&nbsp\;<a href="mailto:humanities@icub.unibuc.ro">humanities@icub.unibuc.ro</a>. In case you want to present a paper\, please add a short abstract (300 words) to the two documents.
