The biennial Three Rivers Philosophy Conference will take place on April 12-14\, 2013\, on the campus of the University of South Carolina. \; The theme for this conference is
\nDeath -- The Reality of an Idea
\nWe welcome abstracts on all aspects of the topic\, but have a special interest in providing a context to explore the relations between contemporary analytic\, bioethical and medical death concepts (e.g.\, on clinical determination of death\, neurological criteria for death\, problems posed by death for determining a value of a life\, suicide\, euthanasia\, etc.) and those concepts in the history of philosophy (e.g.\, Plato on the death of Socrates\, Hegel on tragedy)\, literature (e.g.\, as a pervasive theme in Shakespeare)\, sociology (e.g.\, Durkheim on anomie and suicide)\, and religion (e.g.\, the Ars moriendi tradition).
\nProposals for shorter talks (20 minutes) may be submitted in the form of 300-500 word abstracts. \;Proposals for longer talks should be in the form of complete papers\, less than 5000 words\, and should be accompanied by an abstract of roughly 100 words. \;Please note that the distinction between shorter and longer talks is not meant to mark a distinction in quality and will not be treated as such. \;Our point is to provide a venue for those who would like to present in the shorter format. \;Papers must be in PDF format and suitable for blind review.
