DESCRIPTION:<p>Abstract:&nbsp\;Mindfulness meditation has recently gained attention for its clinical benefits\, but also presents an interesting manipulation of subjective experience. I will discuss different ways that researchers and philosophers have defined and understood mindfulness meditation\, and the difficulties of translating concepts from Buddhist philosophy such that they can integrate with western cognitive science. I will then explore a potential point of experimental contact between these two literatures\; the Rubber Hand Illusion. I argue that the Rubber Hand Illusion offers us insights into the mechanism of mindfulness meditation on bodily self-awareness. I offer an interpretation from the perspective of predictive coding\, a concept from computational neuroscience which has demonstrated considerable explanatory and unifying power. Finally\, I will explain how this motivated the study design for our experiment\, recently conducted in the Philosophy and Cognition Lab.&nbsp\;</p>\n
