DESCRIPTION:<p>The 21st Annual CUNY Graduate Philosophy Conference: Self and Other</p>\n<p>Keynotes: Dr. Akeel Bilgrami (Columbia University)</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; Dr. Daniel Kolak (William Paterson University)</p>\n<p>We invite abstract submissions on any topic related to the conference theme\, broadly construed. Descriptions of the self and our conception of the other &ndash\; including the relationship between the two concepts &ndash\; may be explored in any area of philosophy. Some topics for consideration include\, but are not limited to\, the following:</p>\n<p>&middot\; Social practices of othering &ndash\; seen through the lens of gender\, race\, colonialism</p>\n<p>&middot\; Personal Identity&mdash\;metaphysical explanations\, ethical consequences of distinctions at the personal level</p>\n<p>&middot\; Boundaries and borders between and within individuals</p>\n<p>&middot\; Philosophy of mind and explanations of the &ldquo\;self&rdquo\;</p>\n<p>&middot\; Knowledge of self and other</p>\n<p>&middot\; The socially constructed &ldquo\;self\,&rdquo\; the socially constructed &ldquo\;other&rdquo\;</p>\n<p>&middot\; Aesthetic perspectives on belonging or alienation</p>\n<p>&middot\; The politics and power of inclusion (or exclusion)</p>\n<p>&middot\; Reification of self or other in mainstream philosophy of language</p>\n<p>&middot\; Existentialism and the radical self</p>\n<p>&middot\; Deep Ecology and confounds for the self/other distinction</p>\n<p>&middot\; First personal perspective\, third personal perspective and the relationship between them</p>\n<p>Submission guidelines:</p>\n<p>&middot\; All submissions must be prepared for blind review\, with identifying information (name\, affiliated institution\, email address) included only in the body of your submission email/as a separate cover sheet</p>\n<p>&middot\; Submitted abstracts must be between 250 &ndash\; 500 words in length</p>\n<p>&middot\; Submitted abstracts must be sent as .doc\, .docx\, or .pdf files\, to cunygradconf@gmail.com</p>\n<p>Submission deadline: January 5\, 2018</p>\n<p>Accepted papers will be announced by February 1st.</p>\n<p>Selected submissions will be allotted 15-20 minutes presentation time\, followed by Q&amp\;A.</p>\n<p>Please direct any inquiries to cunygradconf@gmail.com.</p>
