DESCRIPTION:<p>Dear Colleagues\,</p>\n<p>The International Society for the Study of Medieval Theology (Internationale Gesellschaft f&uuml\;r Theologische Medi&auml\;vistik &ndash\; IGTM)\, the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Warsaw\, and the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Silesia in Katowice have the pleasure of inviting you to the international conference <em><strong>Altiora te ne quaesieris (Sir. 3\, 22): THE MEDIEVAL PURSUIT OF WISDOM</strong></em>.<br><br></p>\n<p><strong>SUBJECT </strong></p>\n<p>The conference aims at discussing various aspects of the medieval search for intellectual and moral perfection.</p>\n<p>It is open to philosophical and theological considerations related to the concept of wisdom intended in a broad sense\, both in its theoretical and practical dimensions. Among the many possible interpretative paths\, there are such issues as:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>the cognitive optimism vs the ethical and epistemic limitations of knowledge\,</li>\n<li>the problem of the latent medieval scepticism and of various approaches to the problem of knowability\, which is related to the variety of definitions of the scope of the unknown.</li>\n<li>the basic motivations of medieval intellectuals\, their aims and scientific ambitions\,</li>\n<li>the tension between the condemnation of ignorance\, the prohibition of curiosity\, and the natural desire for knowledge.</li>\n<li>the impact of Aristotle&rsquo\;s theory of science on the medieval views on intellectual research.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Furthermore\, from a philosophical perspective\, wisdom can be considered a matter of inherently and typically human activity\; but\, when viewed from a theological point of view\, scientia and sapientia are gifts beyond the natural human powers. The pursuit of wisdom in the Middle Ages is a provocative issue\, open to many other considerations\, and it encourages an interdisciplinary debate.</p>\n<p><strong>THE DATE AND THE VENUE OF THE CONFERENCE</strong></p>\n<p>The Conference will be held at the Benedictine Abbey near Cracow (Poland) on September 2&ndash\;6\, 2017.</p>\n<p><strong>PARTICIPANTS</strong></p>\n<p>We welcome participants in three categories:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>regular presentation: speakers who present their papers within a regular session\,</li>\n<li>poster presentation within a poster session\,</li>\n<li>presence and discussion only: general audience who participates without presenting a paper/poster.</li>\n</ol>\n<p><strong>PAPERS AND ABSTRACTS</strong></p>\n<p>As a rule\, 20 minutes are allotted for each paper\; after every set of three papers there will be 20 minutes for discussion. Short abstracts (maximum 3000 characters) are expected by March 31\, 2018.</p>\n<p><strong>CONFERENCE FEE: There is no conference fee.</strong> Participants pay only for their meals and accommodation.</p>\n<p><strong>REGISTRATION</strong> will be opened from November 22\, 2017 onwards at the conference website (the website address will be soon announced in the Call for Papers). The deadline for registration and short abstract is March 31\, 2017.</p>\n<p>========================</p>\n<p><strong><em>Altiora te ne quaesieris</em></strong><strong> (Sir. 3\, 22)</strong><strong>&nbsp\;</strong></p>\n<p><strong>Das mittelalterliche Streben nach Wissen</strong></p>\n<p><strong>Internationale Konferenz\, Tyniec\, 2.-6. September 2018</strong></p>\n<p>Auf der Konferenz sollen verschiedenen Aspekte der mittelalterlichen Suche nach intellektueller und moralischer Perfektion diskutiert werden. Die Debatte ist offen f&uuml\;r philosophische und theologische &Uuml\;berlegungen zu einem weitgefassten Konzept der Weisheit in theologischer und praktischer Hinsicht. Unter den vielen m&ouml\;glichen Deutungswegen stehen die Frage nach dem kognitiven Optimismus gegen&uuml\;ber den ethischen und epistemischen Grenzen des Wissens\, das Problem des latenten mittelalterlichen Skeptizismus sowie die verschiedenen Ans&auml\;tze zum Problem der Erkenntnis in Zusammenhang mit einer Vielzahl von Definitionen f&uuml\;r den Bereich des Unbekannten. Eine andere Frage betrifft die Grundmotivation mittelalterlicher Intellektueller\, ihre Ziele und wissenschaftlichen Ambitionen wie auch die Spannung zwischen Verurteilung der Unwissenheit\, Untersagung der Neugierde und dem nat&uuml\;rlichen Verlangen nach Wissen. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist der Einfluss der aristotelischen Wissenschaftstheorie auf die mittelalterliche Vorstellung von der intellektuellen Forschung. Weiterhin l&auml\;sst sich Wissenschaft &ndash\; aus philosophischer Perspektive &ndash\; als inh&auml\;rent und typisch menschliches Tun auffassen\, w&auml\;hrend in theologischer Sicht <em>scientia und sapientia</em> Gaben sind\, die au&szlig\;erhalb der nat&uuml\;rlichen menschlichen Kr&auml\;fte liegen. Das Streben nach Weisheit im Mittelalter ist ein provokantes Thema\, das f&uuml\;r mannigfaltige &Uuml\;berlegungen offen steht und zu einer interdisziplin&auml\;ren Debatte anspornt. Die Konferenz wird in den historischen Geb&auml\;uden der tausendj&auml\;hrigen Benediktinerabtei Tyniec bei Krakau stattfinden. Sie umfasst f&uuml\;nf Sessions mit halbst&uuml\;ndigen Referaten mit Diskussionen und eine Reihe von kurzen Pr&auml\;sentationen von Forschungsprojekten. Im Begleitprogramm stehen eine F&uuml\;hrung durch die Abtei und ein Ausflug in die historische Altstadt von Krakau.</p>\n
