DESCRIPTION:<p>On behalf of the Department of Philosophy at The University of Texas at Austin (UTA) and UTA&rsquo\;s chapter of Minorities and Philosophy (MAP)\, I&rsquo\;m thrilled to announce a new event: Compass: An Undergraduate Philosophy Workshop. This workshop will bring together members of underrepresented groups in philosophy\, from Texas\, for two days of philosophical discussion\, networking and mentoring. Philosophy majors/minors from Texas universities/colleges that identify as one or more of the following are invited to apply:</p>\n<p>&bull\;Female</p>\n<p>&bull\;Transgender</p>\n<p>&bull\;Gender queer</p>\n<p>&bull\;Disabled</p>\n<p>&bull\;Racial minority</p>\n<p>&bull\;Religious minority</p>\n<p>The Workshop will take place at UTA on April 14 and 15\, 2018. There will be eight sessions. Six will be devoted to discussing philosophy papers &ndash\; read in advance &ndash\; from a range of sub-disciplines. Topics are likely to include: feminist &amp\; critical race theory\, philosophy of mind\, metaphysics\, &amp\; ancient philosophy. The remaining two will involve mentoring workshops with faculty members from UTA. Topics are likely to include: what makes a successful graduate school application?&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>We will be selecting ten students to attend the workshop. All transportation\, accommodation and food costs will be covered for those selected. To apply\, send an email to austincompass2018@gmail.com with the following information\, no later than February 1\, 2018 at 12:00 am CMT:&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>I.A statement of purpose\, between 300-500 words\, including answers to the following questions:</p>\n<p>&bull\;Can you commit to reading six philosophy papers in advance of the workshop\, each approximately 20 pages in length?&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>&bull\;How many years of university/college have you completed?&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>&bull\;How many philosophy courses have you taken?&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>&bull\;Why do you think you would benefit from attending the workshop?&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>II.One letter of recommendation from either a professor\, teaching assistant\, or (academic) mentor.</p>\n<p>Students selected to participate will be notified in the first week of March.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>We look forward to receiving your applications.
