DESCRIPTION:
Contours of Dignity offers a challenge to the standard conception of dignity as an &lsquo\;inner kernel&rsquo\; that grounds our moral worth and human rights. Such a conception\, it is argued\, cannot make sense of the role that dignity plays in social life\, especially the ways in which experiences such as torture\, hospitalisation\, or public humiliation constitute violations of dignity. The alternative conception developed here centres on the idea that dignity commands respect. Since respect can take various forms &ndash\; i.e. appraisal or recognition &ndash\; and because respect can be either self- or other-directed\, the resulting theory is multifaceted\, involving three distinct &lsquo\;strands&rsquo\; of dignity: personal\, social\, and civic. These strands enable us to explain both what unifies the varied phenomena over which dignity ranges\, and why their differences are morally significant. &nbsp\;
\n
All are welcome to attend the workshop\, and registration is free. Please RSVP for catering purposes\, and to receive a copy of the manuscript.
\n\n
Schedule:
\n
10:00-10:30 - Suzy Killmister
\n
10:30-11:30 - Paul Formosa
\n
11:30-11:45 - break
\n
11:45-12:45 - Louise Richardson-Self
\n
12:45-1:45 - lunch
\n
1:45-2:45 - Karen Jones
\n
2:45-3:45 - Paul O'Halloran
\n
3:45-4:00 - break
\n
4:00-5:00 - Michael Smith
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
