DESCRIPTION:<p>The 9th Annual</p>\n<p><strong>Values in Medicine\, Science\, and Technology Conference</strong></p>\n<p>at</p>\n<p><strong>The Center for Values in Medicine\, Science\, and Technology</strong><br><strong>The University of Texas at Dallas</strong><br>Richardson\, Texas\, USA</p>\n<p>May 23-25\, 2019</p>\n<p>Conference Description</p>\n<p>This interdisciplinary conference seeks to explore the interplay between human\, ethical\, cultural\, and political values\, on the one hand\, and science\, technology\, engineering\, and medical research and practice\, on the other hand. We invite presentations that seek not only to understand how values and science have and do influence one another\, but also how they must and should influence one another (as well as types of influence that should be avoided). Finally\, we are ultimately interested in promoting ethically responsible and socially beneficial scientific research and technological innovation\, and critical reflection about the influence of science\, technology\, and medicine on our values\, culture\, practices\, and worldview.</p>\n<p>Any proposals that address the general relations of values to science\, technology\, and medicine are welcome. We seek proposals from any disciplinary or theoretical approach that addresses these themes and are especially interested in interdisciplinary work. Our call for papers will be posted soon.</p>\n<p><strong>SRPoiSE Plenary Session: The 10th Anniversary of&nbsp\;<em>Science\, Policy\, and the Value-Free Ideal</em>&nbsp\;by Heather Douglas</strong></p>\n<p>A discussion of the impacts of the book over the last 10 years and what the next 10 years holds for discussions of values in science\, broadly construed.</p>\n<p>Confirmed Speakers:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heather Douglas&nbsp\;(Michigan State University)</li>\n<li>Alan Richardson (Univ British Columbia)</li>\n<li>Others TBD</li>\n</ul>\n<p>This plenary session is sponsored by&nbsp\;the Consortium for Socially Relevant Philosophy of/in Science and Engineering (SRPoiSE).</p>\n<p><strong>For those attending the SPT 2019 Biennial Meeting</strong></p>\n<p>The&nbsp\;Society for Philosophy and Technology (SPT) meeting&nbsp\;will take place May 20-22 at Texas A&amp\;M University in College Station\, Texas. If you&rsquo\;re thinking about attending SPT or VMST\, you should consider submitting to both\, due to their close proximity in space and time.</p>\n<p>College Station is less than a 4 hour drive away from UT Dallas\, or an hour long nonstop flight of about $130. We are happy to help folks coordinate to travel from SPT to VMST\, as the conference themes overlap considerably. More info on that to come.</p>
