DESCRIPTION:<p>CALL FOR POSTERS&nbsp\;&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Ratio&nbsp\;Conference Applied Philosophy of Language: Politics and Power</p>\n<p>University of Reading 4th May &nbsp\;</p>\n<p>We are happy to announce the 2019&nbsp\;Ratio&nbsp\;conference\, to be held at the University of Reading on 4th May 2019:&nbsp\;https://sites.google.com/view/ratioconference/home.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>The conference is part of the series of one-day&nbsp\;Ratio&nbsp\;conferences hosted by the Philosophy Department of the University of Reading. Each event is dedicated to a specific area of interest in current analytic philosophy and informs a special issue of the journal. The theme of the forthcoming conference is &ldquo\;Applied Philosophy of Language: Politics and Power&rdquo\;.</p>\n<p>Although philosophy of language has tradionally been understood as a purely theoretical discipline\, recent scholarship has begun to explore practical applications of the conceptual tools developed by philosophers of language. The&nbsp\;aim&nbsp\;of the&nbsp\;2019 Ratio Conference&nbsp\;is to&nbsp\;foster this development&nbsp\;by discussing&nbsp\;how insights from philosophy of language can shed light on important contemporary phenomena in the spheres of politics\, law and society\,&nbsp\;as in&nbsp\;philosophical analysis of disagreement\, derogatory speech\, gendered terms\, and propaganda. This conference will host original contributions by leading&nbsp\;researchers in the field.</p>\n<p>Confirmed speakers:</p>\n<p>Teresa Marques\, University of Barcelona\;</p>\n<p>&Aring\;sa Wikforss\, University of Stockholm\;</p>\n<p>Derek Ball\, University of St Andrews\;</p>\n<p>Timothy Endicott\, University of Oxford.</p>\n<p>In addition to the keynote talks\, we will be holding&nbsp\;a&nbsp\;poster presentation session\, to give postgraduate students and early career researchers the opportunity to present their research.</p>\n<p>We invite submissions of 300-word abstracts&nbsp\;before the&nbsp\;deadline&nbsp\;of&nbsp\;<strong>24</strong>th February 2019. We welcome&nbsp\;the participation of&nbsp\;students working in and outside Philosophy\, and would particularly like to encourage submissions from underrepresented groups.</p>\n<p>Possible topics for posters include (but are not limited to):</p>\n<p>- politics\, political speech and&nbsp\;propaganda\;</p>\n<p>- law and legal language\;</p>\n<p>- lying\, misleading\, bullshit\;</p>\n<p>- derogatory speech\;</p>\n<p>- feminist philosophy of language\;</p>\n<p>- medicine and language\;</p>\n<p>- methodological&nbsp\;issues&nbsp\;related to the application of philosophy of language\;</p>\n<p>- normative impacts of philosophical analyses of language\;</p>\n<p>- connections with empirical research in the cognitive and social sciences.</p>\n<p>Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words\, prepared for blind review\,&nbsp\;and should be sent to&nbsp\;ratioconference2019@gmail.com.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>For more information about the conference\, and to register for a place\, please visit our website:&nbsp\;https://sites.google.com/view/ratioconference/home.</p>\n<p>We&nbsp\;are pleased to&nbsp\;be able to have some funds available to help towards the board and accommodation of a small number of postgraduate participants\, travelling from outside Reading.
