CFA: Philosophy of Love
\nDepartment of Philosophy
\nTilburg University
\nWe are pleased to announce our call for abstracts for a workshop on the Philosophy of Love\, to
\ntake place at Tilburg University on 13-14 February 2019.
\nFranç\;ois de La Rochefoucauld writes: &ldquo\;There are some people who would never have fallen in
\nlove if they had not heard others talk about it.&rdquo\; For western philosophers\, these &ldquo\;others&rdquo\; are the
\nancient Greeks\, and the kinds of love that they talked about - eros\, philia and agape - still loom
\nlarge in philosophical conversations about love today. Would philosophers recognize love if it
\nescaped the boundaries of these categorizations? What is the relevance of canonical texts on
\nlove today? What can philosophers learn from interdisciplinary and non-western approaches to
\nthe topic?
\nWe are inviting abstracts on these and related questions in any sub-discipline of philosophy.
\nPossible topics include (but are not limited to): romantic love\; love of animals\; religious love\;
\nlove in the digital age\; falling in love\; lovesickness\; familial love\; erotic love\; the ethics of love\;
\nlove and death/ mourning\; the end of love\; romantic love\; charity/ neighbourly love etc.
\nThis will be a small workshop centered around the discussion of full papers\, which will be made
\navailable in advance. Every presenter will receive ample time to share their ideas and connect
\nthem to the larger conference-wide conversation. Confirmed speakers include: Anca Gheaus\,
\nTony Milligan\, Heleen Pott and Katrien Schaubroeck.
\nYour abstract should be 350-500 words and prepared for blind review. Please submit the
\nabstract as a PDF document to philosophyoflove@uvt.nl and include your name\, departmental
\naffiliation\, email address and the title of your paper in the body of the email.
\nThe submission deadline for abstracts is 1 September 2019. Successful applicants will be
\ninformed 1 October. Please note that successful applicants will be expected to submit a full draft
\nof their paper by 15 January 2020.
\nPapers dealing specifically with the ethics of love will - upon blind review - be considered for a
\nspecial issue of the Journal of Ethics (Springer).
