LOCATION:4 Rue Ledru\, CLERMONT FERRAND\, France\, 63000
DESCRIPTION:
Lately\, there have been a&nbsp\;number of&nbsp\;studies of the significance\, language\, and logic of the method of analysis and synthesis in Greek geometry (Netz&nbsp\;2000\,&nbsp\;Menn&nbsp\;2002\,&nbsp\;Fournarakis&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;Christianidis&nbsp\;2006\,&nbsp\;Graziani&nbsp\;2007\,&nbsp\;Acerbi&nbsp\;2011\, Saito and&nbsp\;Sidoli&nbsp\;2010\,&nbsp\;Sidoli&nbsp\;2018). The aim of this conference is to try to take stock of these studies from a multidisciplinary perspective (philosophy\, history of mathematics\, and logic).&nbsp\;We welcome abstracts on any of (but not limited to) the following topics:
\n
\n
History of philosophy: ancients philosophical accounts of Greek geometrical analysis (Plato\, Aristotle\, Aristotelian tradition\, Proclus)\, Arabic tradition\, modern account (Descartes\, Newton\, Leibniz)
\n
Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics: the exploration of the connections between our topic and heuristics\, diagrammatic reasoning\, and modern logic (sequent calculus\, intuitionistic type theory)
\n
History of ancient mathematics: the language of&nbsp\;givens\, mathematical and meta-mathematical&nbsp\;formulae&nbsp\;in Geometric analysis&rsquo\; extant examples\, continuity and rupture&nbsp\;in the evolution of&nbsp\;the method of analysis from Archimedes to Diophantus.
\n
\n
Confirmed speakers:
\n
\n
Ken Saito (Osaka Prefecture University)
\n
Jean&nbsp\;Christianidis&nbsp\;(University of Athens)
\n
Micheline&nbsp\;Decorps-Foulquier&nbsp\;(University of Clermont Auvergne)
\n
\n
Call for papers
\n
We invite researchers working on the topic and interested in giving a talk to&nbsp\;submit&nbsp\;an abstract of&nbsp\;approximately&nbsp\;500 words and a short CV to&nbsp\;Gianluca&nbsp\;Longa (gianluca.longa@gmail.com).&nbsp\;
\n
Deadline: November 30th\, 2019.
\n
Notification of acceptance: we will&nbsp\;notify&nbsp\;authors of the decision&nbsp\;regarding&nbsp\;their paper by Mid-December.
\n
Attendance is free of charge\, and lunch and coffee&nbsp\;will be served&nbsp\;along with a complimentary dinner.
