DESCRIPTION:
Remembrance\, Forgiveness\, Time
\n\n
MANCEPT WORKSHOPS IN POLITICAL THEORY 2020- 8th to 11th September 2020 Manchester\, United Kingdom
\n\n
https://mancept.wordpress.com/forgiveness-rememberance-time/
\n\n
Convenors:
\n\n
Prof. Dr Oliver Hallich (University of Duisburg- Essen)&nbsp\; oliver.hallich@uni-due.de
\n\n
Dr Paula Satne (University of Wolverhampton) P.Satne@wlv.ac.uk
\n\n
&nbsp\;
\n\n
The organisers of Mancept 2020 have now confirmed that\, due to the ongoing crisis\, this year the workshops will take place online. The cost has not been confirmed but we have been told that it will not be more than &pound\;15 per attendee.
\n\n
Given the change in format\, we think appropriate to Extend the Call for Papers for our workshop. The new deadline is Monday 6th July 2020. Please note that we are particularly interested in papers that explore the relation between forgiveness and time and/ or forgiveness and memory. A list of possible topics is included below.
\n\n
CALL FOR PAPERS
\n\n
Standardly\, forgiveness is seen as the overcoming\, on moral grounds\, of vindictive passions &ndash\; the passions of anger\, resentment\, and even hatred\, that are often occasioned when one has been deeply wronged by another (e.g. Murphy\, 1988). However\, some authors see forgiveness as a normative phenomenon in the sense that forgiveness alters the norms of interaction between victim and wrongdoer (e.g. Warmke\, 2016\; Bennett\, 2018) while pluralist accounts argue that forgiveness is a flexible concept that allows for a variety of changes of attitudes and practices according to the circumstances (e.g. Smith\, 2008\; Scarre\, 2004).
\n\n
Taking into account these debates\, &nbsp\;in this workshop\, we want to explore some of the following conceptual and normative issues that arise regarding the relationship between political forgiveness\, memory and time. Possible topics might be:
\n\n
- forgiveness and the duty to remember past crimes
\n\n
- the relation between forgiving and forgetting\,&nbsp\;
\n\n
- the role of the passing of time as a reason for forgiveness
\n\n
- time and the notion of the unforgivable
\n\n
- forgiveness and the discounting of the past
\n\n
- forgiveness and the possibility of changing the significance of the past
\n\n
- forgiveness as a future-related act
\n\n
- the temporal structure of forgiveness as an act or as a process
\n\n
If you wish to participate\, please send an abstract (500-800 words) by email (using the title MANCEPT WORKSHOP SUBMISSION) to both oliver.hallich@uni-due.de and P.Satne@wlv.ac.uk.
\n\n
Please prepare your submission for blind review and note that we are looking for work in progress rather than alreday published material.
\n\n
Some slots will be reserved for graduate papers. If you are a graduate student\, please state this &nbsp\;in your submission email.
\n\n
The NEW deadline for submissions of abstracts is Monday 6th July 2020.
\n\n
For further information about the conference please visit: https://mancept.wordpress.com/mancept-workshops-2020/
\n\n\n\n
Dr Paula Satne
\n\n
https://researchers.wlv.ac.uk/P.Satne
\n\n
@PauSatne
\n\n\n\n
&nbsp\;
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
