\nWill things ever return to normal? One glimmer of hope is the development of a vaccine for COVID-19. But experts predict that a vaccine might not be available for another 18 months at least. This is in part because of the lengthy testing and approval process involved in establishing the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. \;
\nHuman challenge trials are one option that promise to reduce both the length of time and participant pools required for a trial\, but these involve infecting participants with the coronavirus in order to test the function of the vaccine. Such trials are often said to be unethical because of the risks involved to participants. Of course\, we find ourselves in unusually pressing circumstances\, and many potential participants stand willing to take the risk and sign up for such trials. So\, what should we do?
\nWe invite you to join us for a discussion with \;Nir Eyal\, the director of the Center for Population-Level Bioethics at Rutgers University in New Brunswick\, New Jersey\, and lead author of a recent \;influential paper \;advocating for the use of human challenge studies in the development of a vaccine for COVID-19. In this discussion\, Professor Eyal will discuss his recent work the ethics of challenge trials\, his work on \;fairly allocating scarce medical resources \;in these times\, and what lessons we can draw from the pandemic about population-level bioethics.
