DESCRIPTION:<p>What is the relationship between understanding and the good life in&nbsp\;Antiquity? We invite submissions addressing this question\, broadly&nbsp\;construed. Papers may focus on specific texts\, particular thinkers\, or&nbsp\;schools and traditions of thought\, from Homer and the Presocratics up to&nbsp\;and including Simplicius.<br><br>The Colloquium aims to bring advanced graduate students and early-career&nbsp\;researchers (who are within five years of receiving their PhD) together&nbsp\;with established academics.&nbsp\;We invite abstracts of up to 500 words (for&nbsp\;papers of up to 3500 words)\, aiming for 6-8 papers. Each presenter will be&nbsp\;paired with a discussant. There will be a keynote address\, and a career&nbsp\;development workshop.<br><br>Possible topics for papers include:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Socrates on the unity of the virtues</li>\n<li>What does Socrates know--about himself and about the good life?</li>\n<li>Knowledge\, suffering\, and destruction in Sophoclean tragedy</li>\n<li>Knowledge of the Good and the philosophical life in Plato's&nbsp\;<em>Republic</em></li>\n<li>Aristotle on practical and theoretical knowledge</li>\n<li>Physics as a virtue in Stoic philosophy</li>\n<li>Epicurus' injunction: "Flee from all paideia!"</li>\n<li>Solon and Croesus in Herodotus' History</li>\n</ul>\n<p>We expect to offer some small travel subsidies for presenters.<br><br>To submit a paper\, please submit an abstract of 500 words to Andrew&nbsp\;Shortridge aps235@cornell.edu</a>> by 1 March\, 2013.
