DESCRIPTION:<p><strong>Call for Papers</strong></p>\n<p>Special Issue of Review of Philosophy and Psychology: Self-Consciousness explained</p>\n<p><strong>Description</strong></p>\n<p>Human beings are aware of both\, the world surrounding them and themselves as the center of this world. The Special Issue focuses on the second aspect and wants to explore one of the most burning issues of today&rsquo\;s <em>Philosophy of Mind</em>: the constitution of pre-reflective self-consciousness. The notion &lsquo\;pre-reflective self-consciousness&rsquo\; usually is characterized by a sense of me-ness or mine-ness which is part of phenomenal consciousness: A phenomenal conscious mental state like a conscious visual experience includes besides a qualitative character\, e.g. the redness a subject experiences when looking at a rose\, non-conceptual awareness of the self (me-ness) or the experience as belonging to the subject as the owner of experience (mine-ness). Many philosophers believe that pre-reflective self-consciousness is the most fundamental\, but also puzzling aspect of human self-consciousness. A variety of proposals concerning pre-reflective self-consciousness have been put forth in recent years\, especially different versions of Higher-Order Representational Theories (HOR)\, like Higher-Order Thought Theories (HOT) or Higher-Order Global States Theories (HOGS)\, and Same-Order Theories (SOT). Others have formulated strong criticism against HOR and SOT\, presenting non-relational accounts of self-consciousness\, whilst having been criticized rigorously themselves.
