DESCRIPTION:
Aristotle&rsquo\;s logic is often treated as though it falls into two quite distinct parts: the deductive syllogistic system\, discussed in the&nbsp\;Prior&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;Posterior Analytics&nbsp\;and the dialectical system\, discussed in the&nbsp\;Topics&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;Sophistical Refutations. Each of these parts has received sustained\, independent attention: logicians have done much to articulate the structure of Aristotle&rsquo\;s syllogistic\, while commentators have seen Aristotle&rsquo\;s dialectic as key to his whole philosophical enterprise.&nbsp\; &nbsp\;
\n
This conference aims to examine the (putative) dialectical grounding for Aristotle&rsquo\;s logical theories in general (in particular\, but not exclusively\, syllogistic)\, and thus to emphasize the coherence and continuity of his logical writings by taking multi-agent dialogical interactions such as dialectic as the founding concept. &nbsp\;
\n
SPEAKERS AND TITLES
Ana Maria Mora:&nbsp\;Medieval dialectical readings of Aristotle's&nbsp\;De interpretatione
\n
Luca Castagnoli:&nbsp\;Aristotle on the Non-Cause Fallacy
\n
Marko Malink:&nbsp\;Deduction in Aristotle's&nbsp\;Topics&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;Prior Analytics C
\n
arrie Swanson:&nbsp\;Aristotle on the Critique of an&nbsp\;Argument In Itself vs. As Asked (Topics&nbsp\;VIII 161b19-33)
\n
Paul Thom:&nbsp\;Robert Kilwardby on the dialectical syllogism
\n
Mathieu Marion: Aristotle on dialectic: a reassessment
\n
Benoit Castelnerac:&nbsp\;Meaning and Use of&nbsp\;Adunaton&nbsp\;in the&nbsp\;Analytica Priora
\n
Catarina Dutilh Novaes:&nbsp\;Aristotle's logic and the 'built-in opponent' hypothesis
\n
Matthew Duncombe:&nbsp\;What does 'follows by necessity' mean in Aristotle's definition(s) of deduction?
\n
Leone Gazziero:&nbsp\;Dialectic in Aristotle&rsquo\;s&nbsp\;Categories.
