\nRecently I've been trying to formalize the notion of a constraint\, and understand how constraints play a role in scientific explanations. This effort has two motivations: a narrow one\, to develop an alternative to mechanistic explanation in neuroscience\, in light of the fact that not all neural systems seem equally amenable to mechanistic explanation. And a broad one\, to explore the possibility of offering multi-level explanations in a consistent "style"\, whether what is being explained is brain activity\, individual behavior\, or social phenomena. \; \;
