Call for Papers/Call for Abstracts
\nMechanisms in the Sciences. Integrating Social and Biological Perspectives
\nSeptember 27\, 2021
\n \;Department of Logic\, History and Philosophy of Science. UNED-Madrid.
\nhttp://www.uned.es/dpto_log
\nThe topic of the workshop targets the commonalities and differences of mechanisms and mechanistic approaches in the social and biological sciences\, as part of an ongoing project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MECABIOSOC:FFI2017-89639-P). In particular\, the meeting&rsquo\;s focus is on the integration of mechanisms in the biological and social scientific disciplines. Questions to be addressed include\, but are not limited to:
\n\nThe integration of insights from biology and social sciences.
\nHow does mechanism-based integration work?
\nHow are conflicts among diverse perspectives addressed in mechanism-based frameworks?
\nCan multilevel mechanical models account for the diverse aspects / complexity of diseases (e.g.\, depression)?
\n·\; \; \;  \;  \;  \; \;Mechanisms and interdisciplinarity.
\no \;  \; \;How can mechanism-based approaches contribute to the development of interdisciplinary fields (e.g.\, neuroeconomics)?
\no \;  \; \;How do mechanism-based biology and mechanism-based social science relate? (collaboration\, imperialism\, etc.)
\n\nTraveling of mechanism-based developments. \;
\nCan mechanism-based developments in the biomedical sciences (e.g.\, EBM+) be applied in social science and policy making? And vice versa?
\nWhat developments can be transported? To what extent does diversity of mechanisms undermine that transportation?
\nThinking about mechanisms across the sciences.
\nWhich aspects are shared by mechanisms across the sciences? In which aspects do they differ?
\nIs it possible a definition of mechanism that is informative and covers all the prominent examples?
\nKeynote Speakers:
\nRaffaella Campaner (U. of Bologna)
\nFederica Russo (U. of Amsterdam)
