DESCRIPTION:<p>The next meeting of&nbsp\;<em>The New England Symposium on Ancient Philosophy </em>will take place on Tuesday\, April 13 at 4:30 EDT\, where we will discuss Jacob Stump's "Two Kinds of <em>Erōs</em> in Plato."&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Jacob will argue that Plato recognizes two kinds of <em>erōs</em> : erōs for a beautiful object qua pleasurable\, and <em>erōs</em> for a beautiful object qua central to happiness. He will provide an account of how each kind of&nbsp\;<em>erōs</em>&nbsp\;is acquired&nbsp\;<em>-- </em>an account&nbsp\;that explains also how each of us comes to adopt a particular conception of the good (the first principle of evaluative reasoning).&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Jacob&nbsp\;will give a short introduction to his paper at the beginning of the meeting\, and then we will turn to discussion. &nbsp\;</p>\n<p>The discussion will presuppose that participants have read Jacob's paper in advance of the session. The paper and Zoom link will be distributed to participants via email within a couple days of registration.
