DESCRIPTION:<p>Syracuse University and the University of Rochester invite participants to attend an interdisciplinary symposium\, entitled "Philosophy of Data Science"\, to be held virtually on May 7\, 2021. The symposum will be convened from 1:30pm until 7:30pm (Eastern Summer Time) on a Gather.io instance to enable broad participation across timezones\, and is open to scholars and practioners in philosophy\, law\, computer science\, and allied fields.</p>\n<p>Speakers include:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lily Hu (Harvard\, Philosophy and Applied Mathematics) - "Predictive Algorithms and Illusory Ideologies"</li>\n<li>Kathleen Creel (Stanford\, McCoy Family Centre for Ethics and Society) - "The Machine Molyneaux Problem"</li>\n<li>Joshua Kroll (Naval Postgraduate School\, Computer Science) - "Beyond Opening the Black Box: Operationalizing Audits and Assessments for Consequential AI"</li>\n<li>Atoosa Kasirzadeh (Australian National University &amp\; University of Toronto) - "The Ethical Gravity Thesis: Marrian Levels and the Persistence of Bias in Automated Decision-making Systems"</li>\n</ul>\n<p>RSVP in advance is essential to ensure we can manage the Gather instance and details effectively.
