DESCRIPTION:
CFA: &ldquo\;Going up?&rdquo\; Realisation and Composition across the Sciences&nbsp\;
\n
3-day virtual conference\, 15-17th June 2021&nbsp\;
\n
Deadline for submissions: 12th May
\n
Keynote Speakers: Dr. Eleanor Knox\, Prof. Olimpia Lombardi\, Prof. Sandra Mitchell
\n
We welcome abstracts of no more than 500 words on realisation\, composition and their cognates (e.g. emergence\, reduction\, levels\, constitution). The topic is open to interpretation\, but contributors may draw inspiration from the following questions:&nbsp\;
\n
\n
\n
To what extent do the geometrical and symmetry properties of molecules depend on the properties of their microdynamical realisers?
\n
\n
\n
Are biochemical functions reducible to chemical processes?
\n
\n
\n
What is the composition of a black hole?
\n
\n
\n
Can microeconomic models ever explain macroeconomic behaviour?
\n
\n
\n
If mechanistic constitution isn&rsquo\;t causal production\, then what is it?
\n
\n
\n
What sort of relations correctly characterise composition\, either as a universal notion or with respect to a specific case study/science?
\n
\n
\n
Can realisation be reconciled with reductive understandings of composition?&nbsp\;
\n
\n
\n
We also encourage contributors to consider making full use of the interactive capabilities of online conferencing (e.g. polls\, speed breakout sessions\, whiteboard interaction\, hand-raising\, use of Padlet\, live video and other media).
\n
The deadline for receipt of submissions is 12th May. Please prepare abstracts for anonymous review.&nbsp\;
\n
The conference will take place remotely via Zoom. We plan for talks to be 30 minutes followed by 20 mins Q&amp\;A. We aim to facilitate socialising on Zoom during and after the conference with potential for topic-related breakout rooms during breaks.
\n
Submissions and enquiries should be emailed to: metascience-project@bristol.ac.uk&nbsp\;
\n
Further information about the keynote speakers: TBC&nbsp\;
\n
Conference registration will open shortly via Eventbrite:&nbsp\;https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/going-up-realisation-and-composition-across-the-sciences-tickets-150751330287
\n
Please note that the conference timezone is BST\, provisional times: 14-18 BST
\n
We look forward to reading your abstracts!&nbsp\; -The MetaScience Team
