DESCRIPTION:
Our July meeting will take place on Monday\, July 19 4:30 EDT and will be a discussion of Jyl Gentzler's paper\, "Testimonial Injustice in Ancient Philosophy:&nbsp\; The Case of Plato's&nbsp\;Republic."
\n
This paper is a companion piece to the paper Jyl presented here last year on Thrasymachus' challenge to the rationality of living a just life.&nbsp\; In that paper\, she argued that Thrasymachus' challenge should be taken much&nbsp\;more&nbsp\;seriously than many have contended.&nbsp\;&nbsp\; &nbsp\;
\n
In the paper that she will present to NESAP this July (which does not presuppose the paper that she presented last year)\, she argues that Glaucon and Adeimantus' challenge to defend justice should be taken much&nbsp\;less&nbsp\;seriously than many have contended. &nbsp\;
\n
Thrasymachus\, Glaucon\, and Adeimantus have been victims (or beneficiaries)\, she argues\, of what Miranda Fricker has dubbed "Testimonial Injustice"-- the kind of injustice done to people as knowers\, when\, because of discrimination\, their insights are given much less or much more credence than they deserve. &nbsp\;
\n
At the meeting\, Jyl will give a short introduction to her paper and then we will turn to discussion. &nbsp\; The discussion will presuppose that participants have read the&nbsp\;paper in advance of the session. The paper and Zoom link will be distributed to participants via email in a couple weeks prior to the event.&nbsp\; To allow yourself time to complete the readings\, please register at least 48 hours prior to the event.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n

You can register for this and other events on our website at&nbsp\;https://www.newenglandsymposiumonancientphilosophy.com/.
