SUMMARY:Linguistics meets philosophy
UID:20260616T221003Z-iCalPlugin-Grails@philevents-web-bd7db559-gt5qm
TZID:Europe/Berlin
LOCATION:Erlangen\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:<p>The colloquium will illustrate the fruitfulness of interactions between philosophy and linguistics. The leading topic will be the distinction between direct and indirect communication &ndash\; a distinction that is not only of great interest for the philosophy of language but also central for almost any other area of philosophy\, as Grice&rsquo\;s work famously attests. There are many interesting open questions\, not least whether there are reliable tests whereby we can decide whether some proposition is directly communicated (i.e. asserted) or indirectly communicated (e.g.\, presupposed or implicated) with an utterance. The colloquium contributions will contribute to answering these questions by focusing on their applications to two specific topics that are of particular interest to linguists and philosophers alike: epistemic modals and definite descriptions.</p>\n<p>TO ATTEND\, REGISTER FOR FREE:&nbsp\;https://dgphil2020.fau.de/en/access-to-events/</p>
