SUMMARY:Embodied Music Cognition Conference (EMuCog): An Interdisciplinary Perspective
UID:20260611T172353Z-iCalPlugin-Grails@philevents-web-bd7db559-gt5qm
TZID:Europe/London
LOCATION:Edinburgh\, United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:
Over the past few decades\, developments in the field of cognitive science&nbsp\;have slowly but surely reshaped our understanding of the relationship&nbsp\;between the brain\, body\, and world. &nbsp\;Furthermore\, these movements have&nbsp\;developed concurrently with experimental and theoretical work on "embodied"&nbsp\;human activities\, such as various forms of artistic practices and&nbsp\;sensorimotor tasks. &nbsp\;The purpose of this conference is therefore to explore&nbsp\;the current state of the field relating to music and music cognition\, as&nbsp\;well as critically examine contemporary questions and problems elicited by&nbsp\;such research. &nbsp\;Following Pearce and Rohrmeir's (2012) recent overview of&nbsp\;music cognition\, we are interested in continuing to expand the dialogue into&nbsp\;questions such as "Why should music be of interest to cognitive&nbsp\;scientists?"\, "What role does it play in human cognition?" and "Can [the&nbsp\;cognitive scientific study of music] generate real insights into the&nbsp\;functioning of the mind?" &nbsp\;Moreover\, following from the fact that cognitive&nbsp\;science has an inherently interdisciplinary approach &ndash\; drawing from areas as&nbsp\;diverse as cognitive psychology\, developmental biology\, philosophy\,&nbsp\;theoretical linguistics\, and robotics\, among others &ndash\; we believe such a&nbsp\;dialogue must take place between specialists from a multiplicity of academic disciplines.
\n
CALL FOR PAPERS
\n
We are now accepting submissions for both paper and poster presentations.&nbsp\;Papers will consist of a 20-25 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute&nbsp\;discussion period. &nbsp\;Posters will be displayed and browsing times scheduled&nbsp\;after final selections have been made. &nbsp\;All submissions should be prepared&nbsp\;for blind review in either PDF or Word form and sent to&nbsp\;EMuCogSubmissions@gmail.com&nbsp\;with the subject title "Embodied Music&nbsp\;Conference Submission". &nbsp\;Please include a cover sheet with the following:&nbsp\;name\, status (student\, postdoctoral researcher\, etc.)\, contact details\, and&nbsp\;title of submission. &nbsp\;Preferred format of the submission should also be&nbsp\;specified (poster/paper). &nbsp\;Papers should include a separate long abstract of&nbsp\;approximately 500-750 words while posters should include a separate 250-350
word abstract for the selection process. &nbsp\;Please also include the title of&nbsp\;the paper with the abstract.

The submission deadline is June 1st and notifications of acceptance shall be&nbsp\;sent out by June 14th.

For general information\, please refer to the conference website at&nbsp\;http://www.ppls.ed.ac.uk/philosophy/events/view/embodied-music-cognition-emucog-conference. &nbsp\;Any other inquiries&nbsp\;about the submission process should be sent to&nbsp\;EMuCogSubmissions@gmail.com&nbsp\;and remaining questions about the conference\, travel\, or other issues should&nbsp\;be sent to&nbsp\;K.J.Ryan@sms.ed.ac.uk
