The past century has seen dramatic division and categorization arise in the study of philosophy, above all the monolithic division between analytic and continental thought. Many of us deal with these strict boundaries as a matter of course, but are these boundaries as rigid as they first present themselves?
We invite submissions of high quality essays (3,000–4,000 words) from current graduate (MA or PhD) or upper-level undergraduate students for Ryerson University’s 2014 Philosophy Conference. Essays from all areas or traditions of philosophy are welcome, though in keeping with our conference theme, we especially welcome papers that: (a) combine areas or traditions, including but not limited to analytic, ancient, continental, feminist, historical and pragmatist approaches; (b) demonstrate the potential for applying philosophical thought to practical issues or concerns; or (c) reflect on philosophical practices, processes or methods.
The deadline for submission is December 9, 2013; submitters will be notified of acceptance in early January. Please send the paper, plus a 100–200 word abstract, with both prepared for blind review, to [email protected] with the title of the paper, author’s name and school included in the body of the e-mail.
The conference will be held on Saturday February 22, 2014 at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. Our keynote speaker will be Professor Emerita Lorraine Code, whose work exemplifies our theme by combining epistemology, existentialism, and feminist and ecological philosophies.
Out-of-town students will have the opportunity to be billeted with a Ryerson graduate student. A limited number of travel subsidies, based on need and distance, may be available T.B.D. closer to the conference date.
This is a student event (e.g. a graduate conference).
