Registration is now open for the workshop with Jesse Prinz on  “Aesthetic and Moral Values”

University of Stuttgart, June 27-28
Organization: Catrin Misselhorn & Joerg Fingerhut

At this workshop Jesse Prinz (City University of New York) is going to present his work on the relationship between emotions and values in the field of ethics and aesthetics. The workshop will start with a discussion of the relationship of emotions and moral values subsequent to his book "The Emotional Construction of Morals" (Oxford University Press 2007) and then move on to discuss his forthcoming book "Works of Wonder. A Theory of Art" (Oxford University Press). In the book he argues – as he has done before for moral judgments – that our aesthetic appreciation of works of art is constituted by sentiments. He proposes that the blended emotion of wonder underlies all our evaluative judgments with respect to the goodness of works of art.

There will be short prepared comments on the different topics of the workshop. Three central chapters of Prinz’ forthcoming book, in which he addresses aesthetic questions with a framework from the philosophy of mind, are going to be discussed in more detail. In order to engage in an intense discussion we will provide all participants with draft versions of these chapters (as well as an additional background chapter) upon request (email to [email protected]).

There also will be a public evening lecture by Jesse Prinz on Friday, June 27 at 7 p.m. with the title:
"Looking Good: The Interplay Between Ethics and Aesthetics”.

Participation is free, but please register by sending an email to [email protected]
