Theme: Maritain, the Enlightenment, and Phenomenology

A prominent development in the appreciation of Aquinas over the past century concerns those scholars who would adapt Aquinas to the transcendental methodology of Immanuel Kant (notably Joseph Maréchal, Karl Rahnner, Emerich Coreth and Bernard Lonergan), and those who would explore further the compatibility between Aquinas and phenomenology (notably Edith Stein and Karol Wotyla), even engaging the work of Martin Heidegger (notably John D. Caputo). Clearly critical of such a development among those working with Aquinas, the writings of Jacques Maritain offer a context within which rigorous debate and mutual challenge can occur. Papers dealing with one or more of these conflicting voices or directly with the work of Kant, Husserl or Heidegger in relation to any aspect of Thomistic thought are welcome. In addition, one might wish to address the Anglo, analytical development in the appreciation of Aquinas evident in the work of a scholar like John Haldane.

The CJMA welcomes proposals from individuals who are interested in presenting a paper at its 2014 fall conference. We invite papers, in English or French, which focus on the conference theme. Papers on related topics are also welcome.

Selected papers will be published in Études maritainiennes-Maritain Studies.   Deadline for submission of proposals: August 8, 2014

Papers should not exceed 35 minutes reading time.

Those who wish to present a paper should send a one-page abstract or proposal to:
